Your Visit To A
Historical Place
Introduction:-Man is not satisfied with what he has seen and known.
He wants to see more and know more. He wants to visit different historical
places of different countries. Whenever I get an opportunity, I visit a place
of historical interest.
Occasion of the visit:-During the last winter
vacation I had an occasion to visit the mazar of Pir Khan Jahan Ali and Shat
Gambuz Mosque at Bagerhat. Four of my friends and I went there by launch on the
22nd December. Historical importance:-These
sites bear testimony to the preaching of Islam during the reign of Mughal
Dynasty in India.
Khan Jahan Ali was sent to the then Bengal to preach Islam. With a view to preaching Islam he
settled in Bagerthat and did many deeds of public welfare.
Khan Jahan Ali's Mazar:-The Mazar of Khan Jahan Ali
stands on a high land at Bagerhat. The tomb was built with cut out stones. One
cannot say accurately where from these stones were supplied. Some people opine
that Pir Khan Jahan Ali brought these stones from Chittagong by river. On the tomb there are
inscriptions in Arabic. A big fair is held beside the mazar every year on the
night of full moon in the month of Chaitra. Many visitors come here everyday.
Khan Jahan Ali's tank:-Khan Jahan Ali dug some new
tanks and excavated some old ones to remove the problem of drinking water of
the people of Bagerhat. The salty water could not be drunk by the people of
that locality. There is a big lake-like tank in front of the Mazar. It is one
of the big tanks excavated by him. There are some crocodiles in it. Whenever
any visitor wants to give these things to the crocodiles the caretaker of the
Mazar calls out the crocodiles shouting 'Kalapar, Dalapar, come!' When the
crocodiles come people throw cocks, hens or goats at them. We stayed there for
sometime and watched the worth visiting.
The Shat Gambuz Mosque:-The Shat Gambuz Mosque is
a large building. Actually it has seventy seven Gambuz or domes and not 'Shat'
or sixty Gambuz, as the name indicates. Some people say that it was used as a
Mosque by Pir Khan Jahan Ali. Others say that it was used as a Darbar by the
Mughal governor of the place. It is attractive to a large number of visitors
and tourists. Tourists come from all over the world to enjoy watching its
beautiful scenery. Beautiful stones were used in the domes of Shat Gambuz
Mosque. These stones are valuable too. It stands on seven acres of land.
Deeds of public welfare:-Khan Jahan Ali not only excavated the old tanks but also
constructed roads for developed communication of the people of that locality.
The Ghora Dighi:-There is also another lake-like tank by the side of
the Shat Gambuz Mosque. It's a very big tank. It is said that before digging
this tank a horse was made to run a race. It ran straight and stood still
covering a certain distance. That distance was accepted as the length of the
Dighi. That is why the Dighi was named Ghora Dighi.
Conclusion:-We spent about seen hours in visiting these two
places of historical importance. The past history flashed before our mind's
eyes and we came to Bagerhat in the afternoon.
