Title: The Role Of Family In The Past Or In The Present-03

Family is a financial intuition. It is a welfare organization. It plays an important role in rearing children. It civilizes a man. Without living in the family, man becomes furious. Family helps a man mentally. Every man needs two types of food. Mental food is essential for mind satisfaction. Physical food is needed for physical strength. We get mental refreshment from family.

The present age is marked not only by the importance of the family as an economic and welfare institution. But the importance of family is increasing as an arrangement for socializing children. Family is raising children. It is giving the psychological support of adults.

There has been a wide disintegration of large kin groups. Intensification of relationships within the nuclear family is worsening day by day. For the necessity of life, most of the people are compelled to leave the family. They have to go to city area. They have to earn for family. They can not communicate with family in the village.

Moreover, the world is seeing an increasing association of women with earning. With out of home activities they are becoming important in the family. Women are not liking to confine themselves in the kitchen. They want to establish their own identity. Now they want to do something outside of the family. They intend to earn some money for the family.

In the pre-industrial feudal society, both husbands and wives worked together in the fields. Outside the home they worked together. However, in the industrial period, women were segregated from out-of-home productive work. The hearth became the place for them: so cooking, cleaning washing, giving birth and rearing children became their jobs. Men became the wage earners in the family. All other outdoor activities became their responsibility.

In the post-war period, women started joining the workforce. They were contributing to family income. Thus they started exercising an influence on family affairs. Previously, authority in the family rested on the husband who was the decision marker in all matters. But women, with their economic power, started influencing decisions about important family matters.

In developed countries now, household work is shared by both husbands and wives. Outdoor activities like shopping and taking children to school, to doctors are done equally. Both husbands are wives are responsible equally. Large extended families have given. They are still giving place to small, nuclear families.

Even in developing countries, with the process of industrialization extended families are breaking down. Kinship is declining. Single father family is on the increase. The psychological problems of children in such families are increasing in modern times.
